VIEW in PDF RULES OF THE ROAD: DO DRIVERS REMEMBER RULES AND SAFETY LAWS

THEY WERE INITIALLY TESTED ON AT THE DMV?

Overview

Everyone with a driver’s license has gone through the same process in order to legally get behind the wheel of an automobile. Most can even remember the day they turned 16 and had their parents drive them down to the local DMV station to take the automotive driver’s exam and finally obtain teenage freedom, also known as the driver’s license. Studying for the exam was in some cases a year-long preparation in the form of a learner’s permit. Ultimately, everyone practiced driving and studied their test questions culminating in a driver’s exam in the form of a written test, driving simulation, or both.

Some have spent the next 40 years or more behind the wheel, feeling almost as if they could drive with their eyes closed. Others have been driving for less than ten years and still remember that special day when they received their driver’s license.

But whether a driver’s been on the road for 10 or 50 years, how much of the technical aspects of the “Rules of the Road” have people typically retained? Knowing how to operate the vehicle is never enough, especially when safety is part of the conversation. Future drivers go through a written exam filled with a series of questions that cover everything from important laws to safety issues that keep drivers, passengers and pedestrians safe.

Rules are rules. And people are tested for a reason.

Study Background

In conjunction with Edmunds.com’s automotive safety symposium, “Edmunds’ Safety Conference: Truly Safe? Debunking Myths and Crafting Effective Policies for Car Safety,” LeaseTrader.com was curious how many drivers across different age groups truly retain what they are tested on America’s most common drivers exams.

Through an online questionnaire open to LeaseTrader.com members of various age groups, drivers were given the same 10 sample questions used on popular written drivers examinations across the country. In a multiple choice format, drivers were asked a series of questions on topics that ranged from driving instruction to laws to safety. Completed tests were only accepted from drivers who indicated they received their driver’s license on or before their 17th birthday.

The results presented here are based on an online questionnaire that ran throughout January 2011. During that time, slightly more than 1,000 drivers responded with answers to the ten questions (roughly 500 men and women each). LeaseTrader.com grouped each respondent based on type of car registered on the website via four different categories (economy cars, mid-size, SUV/truck, and luxury). A complete listing of the types of cars in each category are listed later in the report.

It should be noted that LeaseTrader.com has no affiliation with any vehicle manufacturer.

Population

Age 31-40

Age 41-55

Age 56-65

Age 31-40: 58% answers correct

Age 41-55: 46% answers correct

Age 56-65: 42% answers correct

The results show a clear picture of a decline in written curriculum retention in relation to the number of years since their actual driver’s exam. As pointed out in the methodology, everyone represented in this chart took their actual driver’s test on or before their 17th birthday. As a result, we can presume that a person in the age group of 56-65 has experienced a much longer time gap for information retention compared with a person in the 25-30 age group.

The results of this questionnaire do not specifically address comparisons of how safe a driver in one age group is compared with another age group. However, many of the sample questions do involve extremely quick decision-making abilities in certain situations, such as question 6 pertaining to safety and children on a school bus, and question 3, which addresses speed limits on roadways.

If anything, the results of this study raise important questions as it relates to existing drivers and the issue of re-testing throughout certain points of a driver’s lifetime. Additionally, are written examinations at the onset of receiving a license the best option for testing? Could a different test method help more with information retention over the course of several decades, assuming drivers continue to get behind the wheel in their 60s and 70s (or beyond)?

The world's best-looking four-door sedan beckoned us from Miami. Enticed, we boarded a jet and paid the 2010 Aston Martin Rapide a visit. Our task was to shuttle Aston Martin's first four-sedan up the coast to Palm Beach – someone had to do it. Of course, we took the circuitous route and spent the day blissfully putting her through the paces as we leisurely motored our way north.

Why did the British automaker design a sedan – and what is hiding under its skin? What is it like to drive? How are those rear-seat accommodations? Most importantly, how does the Rapide measure up to the Porsche Panamera and Maserati Quattroporte? The answers and more after the jump...

The Aston Martin Rapide is a sports car first, a sedan second.

Those exact words may have never been spoken or alleged while the Rapide was under development. Nevertheless, that mantra subconsciously repeated itself countless times during our day with the British manufacturer's first four-door vehicle since the angular William Towns-designed Lagonda left the world stage.

Even to the uninitiated openly-gazing public, the Rapide is purely an Aston Martin. The family resemblance – to the DB9, DBS and Vantage – is unquestioned thanks to Aston's world-renowned and incredibly sexy, sleek silhouette. The designers have done such a noble job hiding the extra 12 inches of length and two inches of height that only on second glance do most realize that this isn't another coupe. Regardless, in a compliment to the designer, most will still believe the Rapide is a stretched variant of the DB9. In truth, all of the body panels on the sedan are new – none of the sheetmetal is shared.

With that in mind, it is no surprise to find that under the skin, Aston Martin has utilized its V/H platform – shared with the DB9, DBS and Vantage – to construct the Rapide. Using technology borrowed from the aerospace industry, the British automaker employs adhesives to bond – not weld – aluminum components together. The front quarter panels are composite, while the doors and roof are aluminum. The rear quarter panels are steel. The end result is a chassis that is very light and extraordinarily stiff. The curb weight of the Rapide is 4,387 pounds – about 500 pounds heavier than the DB9 coupe. Thanks to the engine being set low and back in the front of the platform and a rear-mounted transaxle, the Rapide's weight balance is a nicely proportioned 49 percent front, 51 percent rear.

Under the long hood of the Rapide is a hand-assembled all-alloy 48-valve V12. Displacing 6.0-liters, the normally-aspirated engine is rated at 470 horsepower (at 6,000 rpm) and 443 lb-ft of torque (at 5,000 rpm). Power is sent rearward through a carbon-fiber propeller shaft within an alloy tube to the mid-mounted gearbox. The transmission is Aston Martin's "Touchtronic 2" with electronic shift-by-wire control (that's an overly eloquent way of saying it is a traditional six-speed slushbox with a torque converter and overrides for manual control). A standard limited-slip differential ensures power is sent consistently to each rear wheel. While the four-door shares a powertrain with the DBS, it has been customized for the Rapide, including its own unique final drive ratio of 3.46:1.

The Rapide's suspension is comprised of independent double-wishbones on all four corners. A standard Adaptive Damping System (ADS) automatically adjusts the suspension settings based on road conditions and driver inputs. If needed, a "Sport" button in the cabin allows the driver to instantly set all dampers to their firmest positions – and damage your kidneys. Debuting on the Rapide is Aston Martin's first-ever dual cast brake system with rotors rendered in iron and aluminum. Weighing nearly 20 percent less than traditional all-iron rotors, the lightweight brakes reduce unsprung mass to improve performance, and they reduce brake corrosion as an added benefit. Six-piston calipers hide inside 20-inch alloy wheels up front (wearing 245/40R20 tires) while four-piston calipers, and a dedicated single-piston parking brake caliper, reside in the rear 20-inch wheels (wrapped in wider 295/35R20 rubber). The standard tire fitment is the Bridgestone Potenza S001.

Most of this reads much like a DB9 or DBS review – until now.

The Rapide's two rear seats – le raison d'être – are accessed via the two rear "swan doors" that swing 70 degrees wide (the same angle as the front doors) and rise rather dramatically upward a full 12 degrees. The twin rear passenger hatches are rather short and stubby, but they allow excellent access to the individual bucket seats on each side of the rear cabin. An immense center console swathed in more leather houses dual cup holders, lighting, seat and cabin climate controls for the rear occupants. A twin-screen entertainment system offers DVD video and wireless headsets for those who somehow find boredom in the back seat of an Aston Martin.

Thanks to those same rear seats, the luggage capacity of the Rapide isn't all that bad. Lift the manually-operated tailgate and access to the trunk is painless. A system of collapsible carpet-lined panels folds up and down to isolate cargo from passengers, if needed. We toted a roll-on bag, a computer bag and a camera backpack with space to spare. When more room is desired, the rear seats bow elegantly forward at the touch of a button to lie nearly flat. The space is generous, but don't think the Rapide is going to haul ripped bags of potting soil in this "cargo configuration" as there are yards of expensive leather left vulnerable and exposed. However, the Rapide will effortlessly bring home that priceless oversized framed Monet you purchased with pocket change at auction.

Our test car wore a deep skin of Quantum Silver paint over Obsidian Black leather with contrasting red stitching. The wheels were finished in graphite, which really completed the package. As this was an early production model there was no window sticker in the glove box. However, Aston Martin has released pricing on the Rapide. The base MSRP of cars bound to the States is $199,950. Since our vehicle had several options (graphite wheels, Rapide logo in headrests, rear seat entertainment, etc...) it was likely touching $210,000.

Pressing on the leading edge of the Rapide's flush-mounted exterior door handle exposes the lever to the rest of your hand. Pull, and the door opens – it's the same manner of gaining entry into a private jet. With the door swinging wide and high, climbing into the cabin isn't difficult. Our six-foot two-inch frame fits comfortably and with plenty of room to spare (we actually moved the seat forward a bit). The steering wheel adjusts manually with a lever underneath, while the various seat controls are mounted on each side of the center console. It takes less than a minute to get settled in the driver's bucket seat and the gorgeous scent of tanned leather is very strong.

Front passengers sit low in the four-door, mirroring the driving position common to every other Aston Martin vehicle. In a rather coupe-like manner, arms and legs are outstretched forward, which is racy and aggressive but also comfortable. Although the rear window is very small, the exterior mirrors offer excellent coverage over the flanks when properly adjusted. Unapparent from the exterior, the view outward isn't particularly challenged.

Rear passengers are faced with less comfortable accommodations – deliberately. That same determination that successfully maintained Aston Martin's sensual profile has applied the pressure to those in the second row. While the seating area is beautifully appointed, it is simply too small and claustrophobic for your average adult male. Without question, the Rapide offers more rear seat room than any other car in Aston Martin's history, but we know that's not saying much. However, thanks to that to-die-for styling, it willfully falls short of the competition. We barely fit back there. Instead, we chose to drive.

Like all late-model Aston Martins, the Rapide features a crystal key that is slid into a central slot on the dash – it illuminates, the engine cranks over, and the key remains in place as a piece of glowing artwork on the console. With the starting ceremony complete, the V12 settles into a pleasant rumble. The transmission buttons reside on each side of the arty key. Release the electronic parking brake, press the "D" button, and the Rapide is ready to roll.

Acceleration is strong, but not neck-snapping. Holding the Rapide's accelerator to the floor rewards passengers with 60 miles per hour in just under five seconds – robust, but a number that is no longer very impressive in this stratospheric segment. It is a world filled with forced induction competitors that exhibit immediate torque off idle, yet the Rapide's V12 breathes air at atmospheric pressure. In the real world, most won't care about the numbers as the sound emanating from the 6.0-liter twelve-cylinder engine sends chills decisively down each passenger's spine. The unhampered exhaust spouts gloriously from the twin pipes under throttle, and it burbles during downshifts. In other words, the Rapide offers a sensational bark, but a mid-pack bite.

The Rapide doesn't drive as big as it looks (still, tight slaloms are best done wide to compensate for the added wheelbase). Notwithstanding, any sedan-like driving characteristics are left in the parking lot as the Rapide magically morphs into a coupe at speed and becomes truly enjoyable to command.

We covered a couple hundred miles in the Rapide over the course of a day. It was raining most of the time (thank you, Florida), but sealed inside our leather-lined cocoon, we were isolated from everything nature had in store. The platform is remarkably solid, as if it had been CNC-milled from a forged ingot of titanium. Not only is the cabin completely free from squeaks and rattles, but triple-digit velocities allow only a whisper of wind noise to our ears (the window glass is laminated specifically to improve noise insulation).

The paddle shifters, electronically triggering the six-speed automatic, are easy-to-use and very effective in operation. While it is not today's popular dual-clutch setup, the "Touchtronic 2" mated to the V12 cracks off quick shifts enjoyably and without drama. Even in fully automatic mode, we never found ourselves questioning its decisions.

Straight-line speed is effortless in the Rapide, but so are the curves. Again, in coupe-like fashion, the Rapide dives right in without hesitation. Excellent chassis tuning, a responsive automatic damping system and optimal weight distribution make the four-door an absolute joy to toss around. Reigning in the inertia are overly capable brakes. Thanks to the weather, we couldn't find a surface with enough grip to put them to a vigorous test as ABS would stop our game well short of their true threshold. Still, their application was accurate and easy to modulate.

We must mention the stereo as the Aston Martin Rapide has the best mobile audio system we have ever heard – hands down. Yes, it is standard equipment. Credit the Danish Bang & Olufsen team with engineering a 1,000-watt system that pumps auditory bliss out of 15 strategically-placed speakers throughout the cabin (the system is officially called the "1000 W BeoSound Rapide"). Not only does the custom setup include those two ultra-cool "Acoustic Lenses" that rise like dueling conductors out of the dashboard, but the electronics actually monitor each seatbelt to determine how many occupants are in the vehicle (and where they are sitting) so that the sound may be tailored perfectly within the cabin's acoustic chambers – now, that is cool. With our iPhone plugged into the system, we had Rush's Tom Sawyer blaring so loudly that you would have sworn Geddy Lee was wailing at us inches away, Alex Lifeson was strumming in the passenger seat and Neil Peart was hanging out in the rear hatch smashing a full complement of drums. Our ears rang for hours that night.

We genuinely liked the Aston Martin Rapide, but it didn't leave us breathless. A peerless execution of a sedan cleverly disguised as a coupe – or arguably one of the best-looking sedans on the planet – the four-door isn't the sportiest within its niche (the Porsche Panamara takes that honor), or the most luxurious (the Maserati Quattroporte is more swank). However, neither of those cars would win even a first-round beauty contest against the Rapide. With that sole factor in mind, Aston Martin has successfully delivered its objective.
On a level playing field, it is wrong to measure the Rapide against a Panamera or Quattroporte – Aston Martin's objective wasn't to dip into the rarefied sedan segment and skim sales from the Germans or Italians. This British automaker was seeking to offer its exclusive owners a four-passenger option, something it had never truly delivered. Today, an Aston Martin customer standing on a marble showroom floor looking for something a bit larger and more accommodating than a DB9 or DBS, yet with nearly identical driving dynamics, has a viable option. Without compromise, the pampered clientele will steer themselves towards the four-door Rapide.

DETROIT -- New incentives are boosting Toyota’s U.S. sales big time in early March, and analysts forecast a 30 percent bounce for the full month.

After Toyota brand sales fell 10 percent in February as it struggled with safety recalls, on March 1 Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. Inc. introduced 0 percent financing, subsidized leases and free maintenance incentives.

Toyota Senior Vice President Don Esmond told suppliers today that North American sales surged about 50 percent in the first eight days this month, The Associated Press reported.

But for the full month, Toyota’s U.S. sales will increase about 30 percent, Edmunds.com analysts forecast.

“Incentives work best in the early going, but they start to peter out as the month goes along,” Edmunds senior analyst Jessica Caldwell said today. “That’s why it’s important for Toyota to find something else in the months ahead.”

George Magliano, director of North American auto research for IHS Global Insight in New York, said Toyota quickly attracted loyalists who had deferred buying until an incentive was offered. But the offers won’t help for long, Magliano said.

“This will boost sales a little bit, but it’s not going to continue beyond this month,” he said. “They’re still wrestling with the recalls and new reports of problems.”

Magliano said Toyota’s March results would tend to improve anyway because the industry is rebounding from decades-low sales in the first quarter of last year.

Kepler Motors Motion Supercar goes 0-60 mph under 2.5 seconds

It's hard not to be skeptical when a company that no one has ever heard of announces a brand-new supercar. A few have managed to last more than a few years, like Koenigsegg and Pagani, but most seem to disappear just as quickly as they appear. Russ Wicks, founder and CEO of Kepler Motors, is evidently undaunted by the statistics and is launching his new supercar, the Motion, this week at the Dubai International Motor Show.

To their credit, Kepler Motors seems to have all right pieces to the puzzle. The Motion features all the makings of a 21st century supercar like a carbon fiber composite monocoque chassis and body, active suspension and aerodynamics, and a seven-speed sequential transaxle. The all-important horsepower rating is an impressive 800 thanks to the combination of a modified Ford 3.5-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 that drives the rear wheels and a 250 hp electric motor that sends power to the front. Yes, it's a hybrid.

While we remain skeptical, we wish Kepler Motors the best of luck. They will surely have their hands full filling their proposed production limit of 50 cars that are set to be delivered to customers at the start of 2011. We will be sure to bring you any updates regarding the supercar startup, but until then check out the gallery below or read more about the Motion in the press release after the jump.

PRESS RELEASE:

Dubai, UAE – December 15, 2009 - Kepler Motors, founded by World Speed Record Holder Russ Wicks, will unveil its groundbreaking MOTION supercar at the tenth annual Dubai International Motor Show, December 16-20. Infusing state-of-the-art automotive engineering and applied science materials with the latest advanced technologies, the MOTION redefines the paradigms of the supercar with unprecedented performance, style, exclusivity, safety and efficiency.

The MOTION sets a new standard with all-wheel drive Dual Powertrain Technology (DPT) which provides a combined 800 hp. Power comes from a 550 hp, modified Ford EcoBoost twin- turbo 3.5-liter V6 driving the rear wheels acting independently of a 250 hp electric motor driving the front wheels. This unique AWD system launches the MOTION to 60 mph under 2.5 seconds with a top speed over 200 mph.

"We're delighted to host the worldwide debut of the Kepler Motors MOTION at the Dubai International Motor Show," said Wicks. "The region has a passion for ultra high performance, limited edition supercars, and presents the ideal platform to showcase the advanced technology and innovative features of the MOTION."

The MOTION is developed from the ground up by a team of hand-picked design engineers, aerodynamicists, product development, and manufacturing specialists and incorporates a number of leading edge technologies such as active suspension, active aerodynamics, launch control and programmable track assistant system.

Lightweight, powerful, balanced and efficient, the MOTION features extensive use of carbon fiber composite materials for its monocoque chassis and body. The light, strong and highly impact-resistant structure provides a two-seat cabin designed to accommodate drivers of above average size, in a stylish, sophisticated and aerodynamically efficient design.

The MOTION uses StopTech's new Continuous Carbon Ceramic (C3) AeroRotors on all four wheels to ensure smooth, fade-free stopping power. Comprising silicon carbide ceramic material reinforced with long, continuous carbon fibers, the unique C3 brake rotor material offers greater mechanical durability and unique heat transfer capabilities when compared to competitive carbon-ceramic rotors.

As only 50 MOTIONs will ever be produced, ownership will go to a small, exclusive and elite group of individuals. Each vehicle will be hand assembled and deliveries will start in 2011.

Toyota Dealers confused! recalling 3.8 million Avalon, Camry and Lexus ES 350 models

Toyota Dealers confused! recalling 3.8 million Avalon, Camry and Lexus ES 350 models

Toyota retailers are scrambling to respond to a decision to recall 3.8 million vehicles linked to incidents of sudden acceleration.

Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. Inc. told dealers of the campaign today – after it was announced to the public. The timing has led to some confusion.

“We haven’t received any notification,” says Earl Stewart, owner of Earl Stewart Toyota of North Palm Bay, FL. “This has been one of the most confusing situations to the dealers and customers, and a little embarrassing.”

Bob Moran, owner of Acton Toyota in Littleton, MA, says he, too, was not told of the situation until an announcement already was made.

“They notify the public and get them all stirred up, and then the phones start ringing here,” Moran tells Ward’s.

Normally, Toyota would notify its dealers first. But given the severity of the situation, there was no time to do so, a spokesman says.

“We thought this was important enough to get out early,” Bryan Lyons says, noting all dealers now should be informed about the recall.

Sudden-acceleration incidents involving Toyotas gained national prominence two months ago with the deaths of an off-duty California Highway Patrol officer and his family. Their ’09 Lexus ES 350, on loan from a local Lexus dealer, reached speeds of 120 mph (193 km/h) before soaring over an earthen roadway barrier and into the upward slope of a riverbed.

The car then burst into flames.

Under conditions of the recall, dealers will be trained and receive the necessary components to trim three-quarters of an inch off the accelerator pedals.

Additionally, dealers will receive instructions on how to reconfigure floors in the Toyota ’07-’10 Camry, ’05-’10 Avalon and ’07-’10 Lexus ES, says spokesman John Hanson, noting all models implicated in the recall eventually will be eligible for footwell modifications.

“The Camry, Avalon and ES constitute more than half of all vehicles being recalled,” he says. “(Toyota is) concentrating on those right now. The reconfiguration of the floor sounds more complicated than it is; it just involves removal of a pad under the carpet and replacing it with a different center pad.”

After being told by Ward’s of the prescribed fixes, Moran and Stewart are left scratching their heads.

Stewart claims his dealership has been removing or replacing floor mats over the past several months without receiving compensation from Toyota.

“We didn’t get paid for any of this, and I don’t know if we will for (the recall),” he says. “I’ve never had more calls from customers, and I’m at a loss for words.”

Says Moran: “They’re telling people to go to your local dealer to (fix) the pedal. We don’t know how; they haven’t told us how.”

Toyota says the repairs will begin in “early 2010,” perhaps January. Eventually the recall will encompass other Toyota vehicles, including: ’04-’09 Prius, ’05-’10 Tacoma, ’07-’10 Tundra, ’06-’10 IS 250, and ’06-’10 IS 350.

After the initial dealer fixes, Toyota will begin shipping factory-produced replacement pedals to dealers, noting customers who already have had their accelerators modified can still get the new part if they so desire.

In addition, vehicles with genuine Toyota or Lexus accessory all-weather floor mats will be provided with newly designed replacement driver- and front-passenger mats.

Meanwhile, the National Highway Traffic Safety Admin. says Toyota also intends to install a brake override system on the Camry, Avalon, ES 350, IS 350 and IS 250 models as an “extra measure of confidence.”

The system ensures the vehicle will stop if both the brake and accelerator pedals are simultaneously applied.

The 2011 BMW 550i will feature the recently introduced, twin-turbo, intercooled, direct-injection 4,395cc V8, which features its turbos tucked into the valley between the cylinder banks. It develops 407 hp between 5,500 rpm and 6,400 rpm, plus 442 pound-feet of torque between 1,750 and 4,500 rpm. BMW claims the BMW 550i will accelerate to 100 km/h (62 mph) from a standstill in 5.0 seconds. Its top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph.

The 2011 BMW 535i will feature the company's single-turbo 2,979cc inline-6 with twin-scroll turbo, direct injection and the latest-generation BMW variable valve timing and lift. It makes 306 hp at 5,800 rpm, plus 295 lb-ft of torque from 1,200 rpm to 5,000 rpm. BMW claims the BMW 535i will accelerate to 100 km/h (62 mph) from a standstill in 6.0 seconds. Its top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph.

The 2011 BMW 528i has a 2,996cc inline-6 with improved direct injection for greater fuel efficiency. It makes 258 hp at 6,600 rpm, plus 228 lb-ft of torque from 2,600 to 5,000 rpm. BMW says the BMW 528i will get to 100 km/h (62 mph) from a standstill in 6.6 seconds. Its top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph.

The 2011 BMW 523i also has the 2,996cc inline-6 with upgraded direct fuel injection, but it's been tuned to deliver 204 hp at 6,100 rpm and 199 lb-ft of torque from 1,500 rpm to 4,250 rpm. It accelerates to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 7.9 seconds and provides a top speed of 148 mph.

The 2011 BMW 530d's recently developed, turbocharged, 2,993cc inline-6 diesel has an aluminum block and head, common-rail fuel injection and variable turbo geometry. It makes 245 hp at 4,000 rpm, plus 398 lb-ft of torque from 1,750 to 3,000 rpm. It gets to 100 km/h (62 mph) from a standstill in 6.3 seconds. Its top speed is 155 mph. Urea injection (BluePerformance) helps reduce particulate air emissions.

The 2011 BMW 525d employs the same turbocharged 2,993cc inline-6 diesel, but it's been tuned to deliver 204 hp at 4,000 rpm, plus 332 lb-ft of torque from 1,750 rpm to 2,500 rpm. The 525d gets to 100 km/h (62 mph) from a standstill in 7.2 seconds. Its top speed is 146 mph.

The 2011 BMW 520d will use a newly designed turbocharged 1,995cc inline-4 diesel, and like the larger BMW diesels it features an aluminum block and cylinder head, a variable-geometry turbo and common-rail fuel injection. It makes 184 hp at 4,000 rpm, plus 280 lb-ft of torque from 1,900 to 2,750 rpm. It gets to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 8.1 seconds and will reach a top speed of 141 mph with a manual transmission or 140 mph with the automatic.

FAIL – Most 2010 Vehicles Can’t Pass Tougher Safety Tests

Shoppers looking to buy the safest 2010-model cars will have 67 fewer choices this year than they did in 2009. That's because the test for safety ratings got a lot tougher.

A new roof-strength requirement aimed at protecting passengers in rollover crashes cut the number of top-rated vehicles to 27 for the 2010 model year, compared with 94 in 2009. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety added the roof test to the already-rigorous tests it uses to address increasingly specific circumstances under which drivers and passengers are injured and killed in collisions.

The institute, an auto-safety research group funded by the insurance industry, named 19 cars and eight sport-utility vehicles as "top safety picks." Among them are the Audi A3, Honda Civic, Dodge Journey and Ford Taurus. Auto makers with the most top-rated models include Subaru, a unit of Fuji Heavy Industries, with five vehicles making the cut. Ford Motor Co. and its Volvo unit had six top-rated vehicles, and Volkswagen AG and its Audi unit combined for five vehicles. Four Chrysler LLC vehicles got the top rating. General Motors Corp.'s Buick LaCrosse and Chevrolet Malibu are also on the list.

Video of front-impact crash tests used to determine which vehicles receive top safety ratings. Video courtesy of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Among major auto makers with no top picks is Toyota Motor Corp. Toyota's Camry came close with good front, side and rollover protection, but fell short in the rear-impact test. A Toyota spokesman called the institute's findings "extreme and misleading," considering that Toyota and its units make 38 different vehicles and that only three were tested for roof strength. BMW AG says none of its models were tested by the institute and that its cars must pass rigorous rollover tests conducted internally.

To become a top safety pick, a vehicle has to have the insurance group's top rating of "good" in front, side, rollover and rear-impact crash tests and also have electronic stability control, which helps drivers maintain control of their vehicles in situations that might otherwise result in crashes.

Adrian Lund, president of the Insurance Institute, says his group tests about 50 to 55 vehicles during the model year, using its own funding. Additional cars are tested at the request of car makers, which in these cases pay for the test vehicle. Often these vehicles initially missed the top rating and were resubmitted for testing later in the model year. At the beginning of the 2009 model year, 72 vehicles received the group's top rating. By the end of the year, following additional tests, the list grew to 94.

Video of side-impact crash tests used to determine which vehicles receive top safety ratings. Video courtesy of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

The 2010-model roof-strength requirement, however, pared the list considerably. In this test, a metal plate is pressed against one corner of the roof. To receive a top rating, the roof has to withstand a force equal to four times the vehicle's weight without crushing the roof five inches inward.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration earlier this year said it was making its roof-strength test more stringent as well. In this test, a force equal to 2.5 times a vehicle's weight will be applied separately to the right and left sides of the roof. The rule will limit how much the roof can buckle under the pressure. The previous standard was 1.5 times the vehicle's weight.

The main difference between the two safety groups' test programs is that the federal standard sets a requirement every vehicle must meet. The Insurance Institute tests are designed to show consumers the differences from one vehicle to another under more severe crash conditions.

Roof strength has long been a point of contention between the Insurance Institute and the auto industry, as well as among safety experts. Car makers have resisted tougher roof-strength standards, in part because they say their testing hasn't shown a conclusive relationship between roof strength and occupant safety. They also say that focusing on roof strength in isolation doesn't consider how well a vehicle's structure performs as a whole in a rollover crash.

Other safety experts point out that most people killed in rollovers weren't wearing seat belts and died after being partially or completely ejected from the vehicle. Some say this further clouds the role of roof strength in preventing fatalities.

The institute's Mr. Lund says that while seat belts and crash-avoidance technology like electronic stability control are critical in reducing rollover fatalities, a strong roof is better at maintaining the overall integrity of a vehicle's passenger compartment. Mr. Lund says his group's research, which looked specifically at rollover crashes, indicated occupants die more often in vehicles with weaker roofs.

Top Models

Vehicles that received a top rating of "good" in all four crash tests—front, side, rollover and rear impact—and have electronic stability control to help drivers avoid crashes.

MUNICH – Porsche AG's parent company said Thursday it lost 4.4 billion euros ($6.6 billion) before tax in the year ending July 31, after earning 8.6 billion euros before tax the year before.

Porsche Automobil Holding SE's loss comes after the company failed in its bid to take over the much larger Volkswagen AG.

A Porsche SE statement said the main factor in the loss was a write-down on cash settlement options to VW shares.

The loss was also influenced by the "hidden reserves and liabilities" identified in the course of the purchase price allocation for the shareholding in VW, the company said.

VW's reverse takeover

In its attempt to buy a controlling stake in VW, Porsche SE amassed more than 10 billion euros in net debt just when credit markets froze and it needed to refinance, forcing VW to extend it an emergency loan and opening the door for a reverse takeover.

The attempt ended with VW agreeing to take over Porsche SE's sports car business, which makes cars such as the 911 and Cayenne.

Porsche SE said its auto business operated by Porsche AG still recorded a double-digit operating margin, which means 'Porsche remains world's the most profitable automaker," a statement said.

Porsche drastically slashed its dividend, proposing a symbolic dividend of 0.05 euros per preferred share and 0.044 euros on ordinary shares that it will distribute after taking 1 billion euros from earnings retained in the past to post a tiny 8.2 million euro net profit based on German accounting standards.

Qatar's sovereign wealth fund freed up much-needed cash for Porsche by agreeing in August to take over a derivatives package at a substantial discount to book value that gives the Gulf state access to nearly a fifth of VW's votes.

VW shares slip

VW shares slid 5.1 percent on Thursday, falling below the 100 euro mark for the first time since March 2007, as the air came out of the stock that had seen shares rise to 1,000 euros at the end of October 2008.

The Porsche and Piech clans that control Porsche SE put aside their differences and sacked CEO Wendelin Wiedeking, Germany's highest paid manager, along with his finance chief Holger Haerter in July after their bold attempt to swallow VW backfired.

VW plans to buy a 49.9 per cent stake Porsche's sports car business for 3.9 billion euros by the end of the year, as a first step towards a full merger with Porsche by 2011.

On December 3, VW will seek approval from shareholders for a more than 4 billion euros increase of its preference share capital to fund the deal.

Porsche SE plans to raise at least 5 billion euros in fresh equity to bolster its shaky finances ahead of a merger with its 51 percent-owned unit Volkswagen, a deal set to be completed in 2011.

2010 BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo

2010 BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo

2010 BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo

Despite the departure of controversial lead designer Chris Bangle, BMW is showing no signs of returning to the "One sausage, three-sizes" styling brief that it once adhered to. The latest proof of this is the announcement of the production 5 Series Gran Turismo, which, as expected, looks little changed from the concept that set tongues wagging in Geneva, save for a few details like smaller wheels, more conventional interior fabrics and real-world-sized side mirrors.

The genre-blurring 5 Series GT is, in the words of BMW, meant to combine "the characteristic features of a prestige saloon, a modern, highly versatile Sports Activity Vehicle, and a classic Gran Turismo" – outwardly, at least, we'd say that they've succeeded in meeting that goal, although the final judgment on whether this amalgam of characteristics is a even a direction worth pursuing will ultimately be made by consumers.

In the meantime, we can focus not only on the five-door hatchback's design, but also its internals, as BMW has released specifications and pricing for its European market models.

In the main, BMW has disclosed that Europe's gasoline model range will be composed of the 306 horsepower, 3.0-liter 535i Gran Turismo (a derivative of the fabulous dual-turbo inline-six seen in the engine bays of the 1, 3, and 5 Series) and the 550i Gran Turismo, which relies on a stonking dual-turbo 4.4-liter V8 good for 407 horsepower, an engine that promises to be just the thing when you're running late for your squash court appointment. Finally, there's the 530d Gran Turismo, which offers a 3.0-liter, 245 horsepower I6 diesel powerplant and a tidy C02 rating of 173 grams per kilometer. Regardless of which engine the buyer chooses, the sole gearbox offering will be the eight-speed automatic gearbox borrowed from the 760i luxury sedan. The cog-happy unit should not only help with overall fuel economy, but it makes any model in the range a sprightly performer, with BMW quoting 0-62 mph times of 6.3 seconds for the 535i GT, 5.5 seconds for the 550i GT, and a thoroughly respectable 6.9 seconds for the 530d GT (which also achieves 43.5 miles per imperial gallon, or around 36 mpg US).

It isn't yet clear what models will come to the States, but we're hearing that the 550i will be the first to make the journey, and it is likely to arrive carrying a price tag of around $70,000, which would represent around a $10,000 premium over the less-powerful 550i sedan. Check out the official video and complete press release after the jump, as well as the massive high-res gallery below. Thanks to everyone for the tips!

NEW 2009 NISSAN 370Z, ON SALE JANUARY 2009

The 2009 Nissan 370Z will be delivered to Nissan dealers in late January 2009
The much expected release has a subtle face lift and performance features.

As per Edmonds.com, they have mixed reviews but in all gave it thumbs up
Here are some of there remarks

Positive Remarks
the 2009 Nissan 370Z is very Responsive with a powerful V6 engine. It has powerful firm cornering grip and excellent limber highway ride. Has an excellent seating position.

Negative Remarks
The 2009 Nissan 370Z has a slight engine vibration at its peak rpm that could be annoying for some drivers and a massive right-rear blind spot that could cause problems for others. The instrument panel looks great but its reflections in windshield at nighttime could be very distracting.
