The 2011 BMW 550i will feature the recently introduced, twin-turbo, intercooled, direct-injection 4,395cc V8, which features its turbos tucked into the valley between the cylinder banks. It develops 407 hp between 5,500 rpm and 6,400 rpm, plus 442 pound-feet of torque between 1,750 and 4,500 rpm. BMW claims the BMW 550i will accelerate to 100 km/h (62 mph) from a standstill in 5.0 seconds. Its top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph.

Shoppers looking to buy the safest 2010-model cars will have 67 fewer choices this year than they did in 2009. That's because the test for safety ratings got a lot tougher. A new roof-strength requirement aimed at protecting passengers in rollover crashes cut the number of top-rated vehicles to 27 for the 2010 model year, compared with 94 in 2009. Porsche Automobile Holding SE's loss comes after the company failed in its bid to take over the much larger Volkswagen AG. A Porsche SE statement said the main factor in the loss was a write-down on cash settlement options to VW shares. The loss was also influenced by the "hidden reserves and liabilities" identified in the course of the purchase price allocation for the shareholding in VW, the company said.
