2007 L.A. Auto Show: Hyundai Tests Veloster Coupe Concept on U.S. Audience

LOS ANGELES — Hyundai used the occasion of the 2007 Los Angeles Auto Show to try out its perky Veloster Sporty Coupe Concept on fussy Gen-Y buyers on Wednesday. It was the concept's North American debut.
The Korea-designed Veloster, a made-up word that combines "velocity" and "roadster," is dominated by a panoramic glass roof with a metal strip running down the center. Some critics have taken to describing the effect as a Hyundai with a Mohawk hairstyle.
The front-wheel-drive concept is powered by a 2.0-liter DOHC inline-4 linked to a five-speed automatic transmission. It rides on a 102.4-inch wheelbase and has an overall length of 161.4 inches.
No word yet on whether Hyundai ever plans to build the Veloster.
What this means to you: The Koreans make a play for the coveted Gen-Y buyer, and you can bet they'll be closely watching the reaction to the car in Southern California. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent
