Nissan's Eco-Friendly Engineering Center Opens In Japan

Today marked the official opening of Nissan's new Engineering Center, built within the Nissan Technical Center in Atsugi City, Kanagawa Prefecture in Japan. Taking three years to complete, the center will focus on the development of the Nissan Green Program 2010 - a plan that Nissan hopes will spur a drop in CO2 emissions and promote the use of recycled products in mainstream automobiles. Current projects include continued development of hybrid technology as well as development of Nissan's upcoming clean diesel engines.
The center itself was built as a model of eco-consciousness, featuring a turbo freezer that uses water as coolant for the air conditioning system - a process that is being developed for widespread commercial use. The center also uses a crystal liquid ice thermal storage and heat recovery system, eco-glass, and a system to recycle rain and waste water.
In the recent past, Nissan has spent 90 million yen ($783 million) on the revamping of its R&D centers. This past May, the Nissan Advanced Technical Center was completed, followed by the new Design Center in September. The Powertrain Engineering Center is currently still under refurbishment.
