A bigger minicar? Right next to the jumbo shrimp.

An inch longer and two inches taller than its predecessor, the new Fabia from Volkswagen-owned Skoda has been shown. The extra space means bosses at the Czech firm are claiming it will have class-leading rear knee and head room when it goes on sale acrossEurope next summer.

Customers will have the choice of seven of VW Group's gasoline and diesel engines. For the first time a six-speed automatic Tiptronic transmission is on the options list, while electronically controlled Climatronic air conditioning and an MP3-compatible stereo are also available. Twin front and side airbags will be standard across the range.

The first Fabia has been one of Europe's most popular superminis since its launch in 2000. More than 1.5 million have been sold. The new version will make its official public debut at March's Geneva Motor Show. A wagon variant will follow early in 2008.
