2008 Land Rover LR2
OUR TAKE: The LR2 is tied with the Saturn Vue for our award for most-improved vehicle. Like the Vue, the LR2 has nothing to do with the vehicle it replaces, in the Land Rover’s case, the Freelander. In fact, probably not a single bolt carries over to the new vehicle, and that’s a good thing, because the Freelander was truly a turd.
The LR2 seems well built, looks good in an upscale-y sort of way and does a great job soaking up potholes without the ride too upset. The I6’s power is only decent, not great. Driving an LR2 in the dead of winter with a ton of snow on the ground will prove the best test, however, of both the vehicle’s abilities.
One of the most pleasant aspects of a drive in any Land Rover is the view out the greenhouse—you can see out of this vehicle forever, very easily, and it gives the cabin such an open, airy feeling.
The LR2 slots into the same category as the BMW X3 and Acura RDX, and at least in terms of ride character, the Land Rover has both beat as it’s a lot quieter on the road.
