UHU, China — Chery Automobile Company, which has partnered in recent months with Chrysler and Fiat, says it now plans to have overseas assembly plants in 14 countries as part of its relentless drive to build a million vehicles a year by 2010.
The company this week marked another milestone: production of its 1 millionth car at its headquarters here in Eastern China. Chery didn't start building cars until 1998.
The automaker already has opened modest assembly facilities in Russia, Ukraine, Iran, Indonesia, Egypt and Uruguay. It also plans to add factories in India and Argentina, among other overseas locations.
Since 2001, Chery has been one of China's most aggressive export companies. Last year, it sold more than 50,000 cars overseas. It wants to boost that total to 400,000 by 2010, including more than 100,000 cars for Chrysler.
What this means to you: China's fastest-growing automaker has ambitious plans to expand beyond that country's borders.
